When it’s sweltering hot outside, you feel cool and comfortable inside your air conditioned home. But how are your energy bills? Are you getting the most out of your AC? There are some simple things you can do to enjoy that cool environment while enjoying energy savings too. We’ve put together some helpful tips for using air conditioning efficiently and not breaking the bank.
Using a programmable thermostat can save up to 15% in cooling costs as the unit will only kick in when it is needed. Choose the warmest temperature that still keeps you comfortable - for every degree cooler that you set your thermostat, energy costs can increase by approximately 8%. You can also save by programing the temperature a few degrees warmer at times when nobody will be home.
Use ceiling fans, or floor fans, to help circulate cooled air throughout your home. Running a ceiling fan also allows you to keep your air conditioner set a few degrees warmer without compromising comfort.
Make sure your outdoor unit is clear of debris such as plants, leaves and branches. Any debris surrounding the unit will reduce the air flow and therefore reduce the efficiency of the unit.
You should change, or clean, the filter once a month as appropriate. The filter’s job is to remove dirt, dust and other allergens from the air flowing through your house. If left too long these dust particles restrict the airflow, reducing efficiency and also may end up back in the air you breathe.
To maximize the cooling effect make sure all the vents in your house are clear of furniture or other items and that they are free of dust and debris. You may want to consider a professional duct cleaning if there is a significant buildup. It’s also a good idea to close off vents the basement since this area is typically cool anyway.
Close the blinds or drapes on your windows to cover sun exposed areas. This prevents excess heat from accumulating and making your air conditioner work harder than it has to.
Avoid using appliances that generate excess heat such as the stove, oven and clothes dryer. Again this can cause your air conditioner to work harder than it has to. Opt instead to use an outdoor barbeque or hang clothes outside to dry.
If you haven’t done so already, arrange to have your air conditioner serviced. A trained technician will clean and inspect your unit, making sure it will run at its maximum efficiency. The technician may also find and correct any minor problems during a routine service, preventing them from becoming larger problems later.
